MOTH SPRAY HALTED

We just received word from blogger Eve Pearlman that state officials have halted their plans to spray pheromones over much of the Bay Area, including Alameda, in their effort to eradicate the light brown apple moth. State ag officials notified Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger late last week of their and the USDA's success in breeding a colony of sterile moths to combat the spread of the moth, which they feared could cause millions of dollars in damage to California's crops. They announced plans to use this and other ground methods of stopping the moth at a press conference earlier today, The Chronicle reports. The announcement follows growing protests questioning the safety and effectiveness of the aerial spray program, which began last fall when people claimed they were sickened by the spray after it was applied over Santa Cruz and parts of Monterey County. It also follows two court rulings in those counties that halted the spray until an environmental impact report was done examining its safety. You can get CDFA's letter to the governor here, opponents Stop the Spray here, CBS 5's story here, and the Santa Cruz Sentinel's piece in the Mercury News, here.
